Along the way there are a series of helpful and endearing characters who have survived in the post apocalyptic England to bring glimpses of hope. Against this backdrop is Hopper, a brilliant scientist, plucked from her remote job studying ocean currents into a world of intrigue, and violence as she abandons caution to discover the secret that her University tutor was hiding. Murray’s book is meticulous in its detained description and explanation of the post apocalyptic world where the earth has stopped spinning and the sunny side is largely ruled by a murderous dictator and who has subdued the population into accepting extensive government control, famine and brutality. And also hearing a fellow in a bookshop, who was the most different person to the author (from what I remember from attending a show here in Australia), enthusiastically ask for the book based on friends recommendations. I picked up this book, like many other readers, not because I’m a fan of the genera so much as the podcast.
